Family Tree – Lebanese in America

Yesterday on Family Tree I interviewed Pierce and CSUN student Nancy Markarian who was born in Beirut, Lebanon.

Nancy’s family moved to the US when she was 1 and a half year old, and she lived here til returning to Lebanon at the age of 8 years old.

Favorite memories involve special times with family and friends.  However, Nancy remembers alot of chaos growing up in a violent war-torn country.  She describes an odd feeling of excitement, knowing she could be killed by random violence at any time.

When Nancy was 20 years old her family moved back to the US.  Nancy volunteered with the Red Cross and returned again to Lebanon, where she was assisting Red Cross with rescue and recovery operations following civil war.  She told us how one day she found a finger wiggling in rubble, and called for helpers and they dug out a little boy, who had been buried for 3 days.  All his family members had died.  Nancy was able to utilize her Red Cross resources to place this young survivor in foster care, before the Lebanese government had her deported back to the US.

When asked what priorities she would focus on if President of the US Nancy listed Health Care, Education, and fostering world peace and ending terrorism.
