Each year in Los Angeles County approximately 1400 foster youth “age out” of the foster care system. Many of these young adults are ill equipped to support themselves and navigate being on their own. In an effort to assist these young adults, the Southern California Foster Family Adoption Agency (SCFFAA) created the Foster Youth Alumni (FYA) Co-Mentoring Project, a program that puts willing, supportive and committed adults together with transitioning young adults. This innovative program provides mentoring in a non-traditional way, offering a “family style” experience whereby both the young adults, and the adult co-mentors benefit from working together. Lianne Goldsmith, Program Director of the FYA Co-Mentoring Project spoke about her program, and how individuals can get involved.
